Supporting World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated every 5th June. In fact 2023 is the 50th year, as it was first introduced in 1973. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. In 2023, it is hosted by Cote D’Ivoire.

This year’s World Environment Day theme is #BeatPlasticPollution.

On this https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/get-involved/practical-guide web page, there are many items listed that businesses can do to reduce plastic production and use. We have picked out some of the key items:

  • Reduce the amount of plastic waste produced throughout operations, particularly in manufacturing and packaging

  • Improve plastic design and production to ensure products are reusable, minimally resource-intensive and can be recycled effectively

  • Cut costs through more efficient use of plastic, develop new revenue streams through ‘closed-loop’ business models that recover plastic as a useful resource and win customers by demonstration more sustainable products

  • Leverage emerging technologies to develop profitable solutions to plastic pollution that support environmental, social and governance goals

  • Disclose more information about how much plastic is used in products, including plastics produced annually, as well as the chemicals used in plastic

At Blackmore, we fully support the World Environment Day goals.

Everything we do is underpinned by our ethos to limit any impact on the environment.

Here is what we are doing at Blackmore to reduce the use of plastic and increase environmentally-friendly solutions:

  • Blackmore has minimised single-use plastic when we deliver printed items to customers

  • Blackmore has created bespoke card-based presentation and training folders for customers, replacing customers’ old plastic wallets, in line with their plastic reduction policies

  • Blackmore’s packaging solutions printed on recyclable card, kraft and paper are a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic packaging

  • Blackmore supports customers in their environmental journeys by providing a consultative printing service to make their overall marketing materials more sustainable.

  • Blackmore has invested over £3million in 3 new print presses over the last 2 years, which provide significant carbon emission, energy resource and water reductions

  • Blackmore’s resource-efficient print press uses process-less plate technology, removing the need for water and chemicals

  • Blackmore has replaced plastic matt lamination with a recyclable in-line water repellent surface coating with one of our new print presses

  • Blackmore is finalising plans to install a solar energy system this year

  • Blackmore invested in a new, efficient compressed air system, with electricity savings estimated to equate to 53 tonnes CO2e per year

  • Blackmore partners with the World Land Trust to produce carbon balanced print projects

  • Blackmore operates both the ISO 9001 Quality Management System and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, adhering to the strict environmental and quality requirements

  • Blackmore has a zero to landfill policy

  • Blackmore is committed to achieving net-zero this decade
