At Blackmore, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. When we were introduced to Notpla, we were thrilled to collaborate on printing with their revolutionary Seaweed Paper - a biodegradable material redefining sustainable packaging. As pioneers in environmentally-friendly printing, we were eager to bring their vision to life through beautifully printed items, including envelope sheets and pipette boxes.
Using our cutting-edge Low Energy UV press, we ensured each piece was printed with precision and care. Our unique process dries the ink instantly upon contact with the paper’s surface, eliminating the need for additional sealers or coatings, preserving both quality and sustainability.
To explore the impact of this collaboration, we spoke with Lucy Romo, Senior Business Development Manager at Notpla, about why they partnered with Blackmore and the value we bring to their mission.
Can you tell us a little about Notpla and your Seaweed Paper?
Notpla is a sustainable packaging company pioneering the use of seaweed and plants to create truly plastic-free and PFAS-free packaging alternatives. We develop innovative materials and packaging solutions that naturally biodegrade, helping to eliminate single-use plastic. In 2022, we were proud to win the Earthshot Prize and have since been recognised globally for our revolutionary "not plastic" solutions.

How do the Blackmore-printed items benefit your business?
Blackmore’s expertise has allowed us to bring our Seaweed Paper to life through beautifully printed materials. Their agile approach and attention to detail have been key in navigating the challenges of working with such a unique Paper. Thanks to their support, we’re able to demonstrate the versatility and performance of seaweed-based paper in real-world applications like our Rigid Envelope, used by companies in the B2C industry. Designed to hold items up to 300 grams, it removes the need to use another carton brown box when shipping materials through the mail.

Why did you choose to work with Blackmore and what do you like about the service?
Seaweed Paper is not a conventional material, and finding a partner willing to experiment, test, and adapt was crucial. The Blackmore team has been responsive, collaborative, and solution-oriented throughout the process.
Working with Blackmore has shown how important it is to build a network of partners that share our commitment to innovation and sustainability. As we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible with seaweed-based materials, partnerships like this are essential in helping us scale and showcase the potential of alternatives to plastic.
